Juicing Basics
Making Juice: Juicer vs Blender
Let’s face it, the cost of a new juicer is often over the top. Sometimes you can find them on Trade Me or other local sites that sell used items. You can use the blender you have and just strain the pulp into a nut milk bag which you can buy online or make your own. I use a paint strainer bag but can’t seem to find them here in New Zealand. The Vita Mix or K-Tec blenders are the best on the market but see what is available at your local health shop or look online.
Oxidation is a result of how quickly the juice breaks down. With a cold press slow juicer, the heat factor is reduced and the juice will carry its enzymes and last up to 24 hours refrigerated. Ripping centrifugal juicers require immediate consumption of the liquid.
How to juice
Juicer: preparing your food to be juiced requires washing (use soap for nonorganic, for sure! or soak in a water 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Remember Mis en Place: everything in its place.
Blender with nut bag: Chop up your juice materials finely if using a conventional blender. A high powered blender such as a Vita Mix will quickly and thoroughly blend your ingredients. Depending on the power of your blender you might want to start with small batches to avoid the heating process. A blender can actually cook your fruit and veggie which kills the enzymes. Place the nut milk bag over the top of the blender so nothing will spill over and then squeeze the juice out.
Juice Recipes
Green Juice: Green Juice is strong on its own especially for initiates. Mix with green apple, coconut water, tomato juice, carrot beet, red bell pepper (capsicum) to make more palatable. Use seasonal greens in your juice and cut with spring water. Other: fresh sprouts, Cucumber and Celery as a base are very low in calorie so consider adding fruit juice to it. Some people feel cold or dizzy after a green drink due to their cleansing effects which can lower blood pressure, while cleaning, alkalising and unclogging the blood flow. If you are new to green juice take it easy and adjust to the messages your body is telling you. Some Combinations
celery/lettuce/spinach/parsley;
Fruit Juice: Rinse your teeth after fruit juices and be sure to cut your juices with water as they can spike blood sugar levels and imbalance you. Do not combine melon juice with anything else. Tropical fruits tend to be higher in mineral content and more balanced in sugar content. Excess sugar in any form can lead to dysbiosis.
Fruit Juice Combos
orange or tangerine; pineapple/blackberry; melons one type only- don't mix; apple/pear;peach/nectarine;plum/grape;berries; grapefruit/orange/lemon;apple/blackberry;star-fruit; ineapple (lever cleanser.contains bromaleinenzyme whichi s anti-inflammatory)
Veggie/Fruit: These combinations are a great way to start your day. Be aware that citrus does not tend to mix well with leafy greens except lemon juice. Drink any combo with pineapple quickly as greens are high in protein and the enzyme bromelain in pineapple breaks down that protein fast - try to drink within 20 to 30 minutes of making.
Vegie/Fruit Combos
Blackberry/apple/spinach;Pineapple/mint/celery/leafy greens;pears/turmeric/greens;apple/beetroot/ginger/celery/greens;pineapple/blackberry/greens;spinach/apple/celery;apple/celery/red capsicum;celery/red pepper/garlic/hot pepper/orange juice.
